Everything About Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

  • Plan yapamama

  • Hayal kırıklığı toleransının düşük oluşu

  • Sık ruh hali değişimleri

  • Görevleri takip etme ve tamamlama sorunları

  • Ani öfke

  • Stresle başa çıkmada sorun yaşama

Üç Ana DEHB Türü Vardır:

Ağırlıklı olarak Dikkatsizlik Alt Tipi

  • Dikkati hemen hemen her şeyden kolayca saptırılabilir.

What are the causes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD )?

While the exact cause of ADHD is unclear, research is ongoing. Factors that may contribute to the development of ADHD include:

  • Genetics: A family history of ADHD may indicate its presence in other family members. Genes can play a role in the diagnosis of ADHD. Family studies have shown that the frequency of ADHD in siblings and parents of children with ADHD is 2-8 times higher compared to the general population, and that the incidence is higher in identical twins compared to fraternal twins.

  • Environment: Certain environmental factors, such as lead exposure during childhood, can also increase the risk of ADHD.

  • Problems at developmental milestones: Issues in the central nervous system at key moments in developmental milestones may play a role in the diagnosis of ADHD. Children born prematurely and those whose mothers experienced maternal infections during pregnancy have higher rates of ADHD.

What is the prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

It is estimated that 8.4% of children and 2.5% of adults have ADHD (Danielson, 2018; Simon et al., 2009). ADHD affects 5-8% of school-aged children. Of those diagnosed with ADHD in childhood, 60-85% continue to meet the criteria for the disorder in adolescence, and 40-60% continue to exhibit some symptoms into adulthood. Experts estimate that 15-20% of adults diagnosed in childhood still fully meet all criteria and have a diagnosis of adult-type ADHD.

When do ADHD symptoms appear?

Symptoms begin in early childhood and continue into adulthood. In some cases, a person may not receive a diagnosis of ADHD until they become an adult. ADHD symptoms in adults may not be as clear-cut as in children. While hyperactivity may decrease in adults, symptoms such as impulsivity, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating may persist.

As a point of differentiation in adults and children, the core characteristics of ADHD in adults may be difficulty paying attention, impulsivity, and restlessness. Symptoms can manifest as mild to severe.

Many adults with ADHD are unaware they have it. Adults with ADHD may struggle to focus and prioritize tasks, leading to missed deadlines and forgotten meetings or social plans. Impulse control can manifest in various forms, from impatience while waiting in line to mood swings or sudden outbursts of anger while driving in traffic.

What worsens the severity of ADHD symptoms?

  • If you have a close relative, such as a parent or sibling, who has ADHD or another mental health disorder

  • If your mother used cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs during her pregnancy

  • If, as a child, you were exposed to environmental toxins such as lead, which is more commonly found in paints and pipes in older buildings

  • If you were born prematurely

The risk of ADHD may increase.

ADHD and Gender Differences

For a long time, it was thought that ADHD was primarily a disorder affecting boys and males. However, research has shown this to be untrue. ADHD is not gender-specific. ADHD symptoms are just as common in women as in men, and only about 30% of children with ADHD show these symptoms disappear in adulthood. Furthermore, scientific research strongly suggests that ADHD is hereditary. This means that if you are the mother of a child with attention and impulsivity problems, you may also have ADHD .

Is my inability to read books or my inability to read multiple books at once related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Yes, behaviors such as an inability to read books or trying to read multiple books at once can be associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Some of the core symptoms of ADHD are short attention span, difficulty focusing, and impulsivity. These symptoms can cause difficulties in activities that require sustained attention and focus, such as reading books.

Individuals with ADHD may have difficulty focusing on something for extended periods. They may struggle to maintain attention while reading a book, and as a result, may not finish it. Because they can't concentrate on a book for long, they may get bored and move on to another book.
Hyperactive individuals may have difficulty sitting still and remaining quiet for extended periods. This can make reading books challenging.
People with ADHD may act on immediate impulses. Even if they start reading a book, the urge to do something else may suddenly come, causing them to put the book down. The tendency to start multiple books at once may be linked to this desire to act on immediate impulses. Each new book may be seen as a new and exciting stimulus.

If you think your reading habits might be related to ADHD symptoms, it may be helpful to seek support from a professional. Therapies can be effective in managing ADHD and can help improve your reading habits.

Rejection Sensitivity in ADHD

Individuals with ADHD may also have difficulty paying attention to social cues, which can lead to difficulties in forming and maintaining relationships. A tendency to interpret social cues negatively, or "rejection sensitivity," is common in ADHD. An intense emotional reaction occurs to perceived rejection or criticism, making social interactions even more risky. Social errors, such as thinking one is being ignored in a conversation or taking neutral feedback as biased, can have a devastating impact on the individual.

Could my forgetfulness be related to ADHD?

Why did I come to the kitchen?
I left my glasses at home...

Were we supposed to meet today? I've already promised to meet someone else...

ADHD can cause difficulties with maintaining attention, organizational and planning skills, and short-term memory processing.
Individuals with ADHD have difficulty concentrating. Therefore, they may not be able to fully process or remember information.
- They also find it difficult to remember things they couldn't focus on.
- Working memory is the capacity to retain and process information for a short period of time. Individuals with ADHD often have poor working memory. This can cause difficulties even with simple things like remembering daily tasks and appointments.
Individuals with ADHD may have difficulty organizing and planning tasks. This can lead to forgetting appointments, assignments, and important deadlines.
- Impulsive behavior can cause individuals to make instantaneous decisions and then forget those decisions.
- The pursuit of instant gratification can negatively impact long-term memory and planning.
- ADHD can lead to difficulties with time management, which can result in forgetting important tasks and responsibilities.

These symptoms can make daily life difficult for many people with ADHD. Forgetfulness can occur as part of ADHD and negatively affect an individual's quality of life. If you are experiencing these symptoms and suspect you have ADHD, it may be helpful to seek support from a professional. Therapies can help manage ADHD symptoms and reduce forgetfulness.

ADHD and Emotion Regulation

Individuals with ADHD often struggle to control their impulses and regulate their emotions due to problems with executive functions and the resulting frustrations. This can lead to poorly regulated emotional responses, emotional outbursts, or conversely, suppression or control of emotions, resulting in frequent emotional fluctuations that can sometimes be sudden, sharp, or extreme.

Factors that predispose to emotion regulation difficulties seen in ADHD:

  • Impulsivity: Impulsivity is a common symptom of ADHD. People with ADHD often act without thinking about the consequences, leading to impulsive behavior that can escalate emotions and cause emotional outbursts.

  • Hyperactivity: Emotional disorganization is often more common in people with hyperactivity or combined ADHD. Being constantly on the move makes it difficult to take the time to process emotions, thus leading to impulsive reactions and responses.

  • Stress: Individuals with attention deficit dominant or combined ADHD, in particular, often experience high levels of stress as a direct result of the negativity caused by the symptoms. Stress affects the prefrontal cortex region of the brain independently of ADHD, and this region is the same area affected by ADHD. When people are stressed, they are more likely to experience intense emotional reactions, which can make it difficult for them to regulate their emotions or remain calm in certain situations. When stress is combined with ADHD, emotional regulation problems are multiplied by two.

  • Comorbidities: It is estimated that 13% of adults with ADHD experience comorbid depression and 25% experience comorbid anxiety. When people are faced with multiple disorders and diagnoses, it can be more difficult to regulate emotions and manage mood swings, especially if the comorbid disorder is a mood disorder that independently intensifies emotions, such as anxiety or depression.

  • Medication side effects: Some medications used to treat ADHD can have side effects that can make managing emotions more difficult, such as irritability and mood swings, which contribute to emotional dysregulation.

Emotion regulation is a crucial skill for individuals with ADHD, especially in younger years, where they may experience difficulties in learning and social interaction. Developing emotion regulation skills can help an individual establish more positive and adaptive social interactions. One way to develop these skills is for the individual to recognize and understand their own emotional responses. Recognizing and understanding one's own emotions then allows for more effective regulation of those emotions. This can help them better cope with their emotional states and maintain a more positive mood.

Bunun yerine hareket temelli meditasyon deneyebilirsiniz.

Do people with ADHD not feel emotions?

Alexithymia, or difficulty recognizing emotions, describes problems an individual experiences in their emotional awareness and expression skills. This can make it particularly difficult to cope with intense emotions such as longing and grief. Individuals who cannot adequately recognize feelings of longing may not be able to process their grief in a healthy way after a loss. This can lead to emotional regulation problems and, over time, psychological disorders. Individuals who have difficulty recognizing their emotions may also have difficulty understanding the emotions of others, which can limit their capacity for empathy.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental disorder related to attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Individuals with ADHD may also struggle with emotional regulation. Difficulties recognizing emotions and problems grieving are more common in individuals with ADHD because they have difficulty controlling their emotional responses. Their ability to empathize may also be negatively affected because deficiencies in attention and focus can lead to an inability to understand the feelings of others. Research shows that impaired emotional processing in individuals with ADHD can negatively impact both personal relationships and overall psychological well-being.

Could there be a link between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and my tendency to overspend?

It is known that individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may tend to overspend on purchases in certain situations. Symptoms of ADHD include impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity. These traits, particularly impulsive behaviors, can increase the tendency towards uncontrolled shopping.

Individuals with ADHD may seek immediate gratification, leading to impulsive or unnecessary shopping. Furthermore, due to attention deficit, they may have difficulty controlling their spending or purchasing items while shopping. Hyperactivity can also trigger this behavior, as the desire to be constantly on the move or to try new things can be satisfied through shopping.

However, not every individual with ADHD exhibits this behavior. It depends on individual differences, environmental factors, and how a person manages their ADHD. If you feel your shopping habits are getting out of control, seeking professional help can be beneficial. Therapy, medication, or a combination of both can help manage ADHD symptoms, which in turn can help you control your shopping habits.

Is frequently daydreaming or daydreaming a symptom of ADHD?

Dysfunctional daydreaming (DDH), considered a dissociative disorder by dissociation researchers, is characterized by excessive and addictive daydreaming, involving intrusive and emotional fantasies that impair functioning and increase distress. Individuals experiencing DDH may often meet ADHD criteria because DDH causes inattention due to its addictive and immersive daydreaming, leading to misdiagnostic assessments. Conversely, most people with ADHD do not suffer from DDH. Intrusive daydreaming is not a distinct mental state characterizing ADHD, but it can co-occur.

Symptoms such as hair or skin pulling, nail biting, and pimple squeezing are indicative of ADHD.

Behavioral disorders associated with ADHD, such as difficulty controlling oneself, impulsivity, and repetitive behavioral patterns, may also be observed. These disorders include:

Hair Pulling (Trichotillomania)

Hair pulling is a common behavior among individuals with ADHD. This behavior manifests as pulling, tearing, or plucking hair from the scalp. The underlying cause is an attempt to cope with distress, anxiety, stress, or distracting thoughts. Hair pulling can affect an individual's social relationships and reduce their self-confidence.

Skin Picking (Dermatillomania)

Skin picking, which involves repeatedly scratching or biting the skin, is also common among individuals with ADHD. Underlying causes for this behavior may include stress, anxiety, impulsivity, and attention deficit. Skin picking can cause wounds, scars, and infections, so prevention and extinguishing the behavior are priorities.

Squeezing Pimples (Acne Excoriations)

Among individuals with ADHD, squeezing pimples (the behavior of squeezing or scraping pimples on the face or body) is also a common cause. This behavior may stem from ADHD symptoms such as impulsivity, impatience, and hyperactivity.

ADHD and Hoarding

Hoarding behavior can be observed in individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Objects may provide emotional security and enhance a sense of control, leading to a tendency to accumulate unnecessary items. According to DSM-5, symptoms of hoarding disorder include an inability to discard objects, loss of personal space, and impaired functionality.

ADHD and Addiction

Individuals with ADHD are more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as substance abuse and gambling. In my opinion, this may be a result of impulsivity and a tendency towards risk-taking. It is important to be vigilant regarding addiction tendencies during ADHD treatment.

If ADHD runs in my family, is it likely to happen to me too?

Scientific research indicates a strong link between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and genetic predisposition. It is believed that ADHD arises from the interaction of genetic and environmental factors.

Genetic Predisposition and Family History:

Studies show that approximately 70-80% of ADHD cases are linked to genetic factors. This indicates a very strong genetic transmission of ADHD. First-degree relatives (parents and siblings) of children with ADHD are 2 to 8 times more likely to have ADHD than the general population. In identical twins, if one twin has ADHD, the probability of the other twin also having ADHD is between 50-80%. This rate is lower in fraternal twins.

Faraone and Biederman (1994) stated that the genetic transmission rate of ADHD is 76%, which is one of the highest rates among psychiatric disorders.
Lichtenstein et al. (2012), in a large twin study conducted in Sweden, found that the genetic transmission rate of ADHD was 72%.
Thapar et al. (2013) showed that, in addition to genetic predisposition, environmental risk factors such as smoking during pregnancy, low birth weight, and premature birth may also be effective in the development of ADHD.

Both genetic and environmental factors are important in the development of ADHD. These may include prenatal and postnatal influences, parenting styles, diet, and exposure to toxins.

If you have a family history of ADHD, you are more likely to have it as well, but this is not a certainty, and environmental factors should also be considered. If you have symptoms, consulting a specialist would be the best approach.

Could my child's prolonged exposure to screens (television/phone/computer) cause ADHD?

Several studies have been conducted on a possible link between screen time and ADHD, but there is no scientifically supported evidence that a diagnosis of ADHD is directly related to screen time. However, some findings suggest that screen time may have effects on children's attention and behavior.

Researchers have found that excessive television viewing in early childhood can increase the likelihood of children experiencing attention problems by the age of 7. They also noted that children and adolescents who play video games for more than two hours a day have an increased risk of experiencing attention problems. This has shown that excessive screen time may be associated with attention problems and hyperactivity symptoms in children.

Screens can be distracting with constantly changing images and sounds. This can negatively affect attention span, especially in developing children. Screen time, particularly before bedtime, can disrupt children's sleep patterns, and sleep deprivation can increase attention problems and hyperactivity. Excessive screen time can also reduce physical activity, exacerbating attention problems and behavioral issues.

Points to Note:
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends limiting screen time for children under 2 years old and limiting daily screen time to 1-2 hours for children over 2 years old.

Care should be taken to ensure that the content children watch is educational and age-appropriate.
Children should be provided with opportunities to lead balanced lives through physical activity, social interaction, and creative play.
Parents should be good role models for their children regarding screen time and monitor their screen usage.

The teacher suspects my child has ADHD.

If a teacher suspects your child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), it's important to take that suspicion seriously and properly assess your child.

Schedule a meeting with the teacher and obtain detailed information about your child's behavior at school. Find out which specific behaviors or situations led the teacher to suspect ADHD. This information will be helpful in your consultation with the specialist. The most qualified specialists to diagnose ADHD are child psychiatrists and psychologists. These specialists can comprehensively evaluate your child's behaviors and symptoms. A thorough assessment process is usually required to diagnose ADHD. This process may include questionnaires and rating scales completed by parents, teachers, and other caregivers. Specialists conduct assessments by interviewing your child individually and observing their behavior. If necessary, additional tests related to attention, learning, and behavior may be administered.

Learning about ADHD will help you better understand your child's symptoms and needs. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, specialists will create a treatment plan with you. This plan may include various interventions such as medication, behavioral therapy, and educational support. It is important to regularly monitor your child's development and response to treatment. This will allow you to make changes to the treatment plan as needed.

Taking your child's ADHD symptoms seriously and intervening early will ensure they receive better support in their education and social life. The healthiest approach is to conduct this process under the guidance of a specialist.

Are Asperger's and ADHD Similar?

Asperger's Syndrome and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may share some similar symptoms, but they are different disorders and have different diagnostic processes.

Similarities:

  • Both children with Asperger's syndrome and children with ADHD can experience attention problems. However, the causes and nature of these attention problems may differ.

  • In both cases, difficulties in social interaction can be observed. While children with ADHD may experience social problems due to inattention and impulsivity, deficits in social comprehension and communication skills are prominent in Asperger Syndrome.

  • The hyperactive-impulsive type of ADHD can resemble the excessive movement and impulsivity seen in some children with Asperger's Syndrome.

  • Both ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome can affect children's school performance and behavior.

Differences:

  • Asperger's Syndrome is characterized by significant difficulties in social understanding, communication, and interaction. Children with ADHD generally understand social rules, but may have difficulty applying them due to inattentiveness or impulsivity.

  • Children with Asperger's Syndrome often have narrow and intense areas of interest. This is not commonly seen in ADHD.

  • Sensory sensitivities are common in Asperger's Syndrome (e.g., extreme sensitivity to noise, light, or touch). In ADHD, these types of sensory sensitivities are generally less pronounced.

  • Individuals with Asperger's Syndrome may have difficulty understanding social cues and body language. Individuals with ADHD often understand these types of social cues but may have trouble paying attention.

A comprehensive assessment should be conducted for both Asperger Syndrome and ADHD. This assessment should be performed by a child psychiatrist, psychologist, and other specialists. The opinions of multiple specialists should be sought during the assessment process. Observations and reports from parents, teachers, and other caregivers play a significant role in the diagnostic process. These observations are critical for understanding how a child's behavior changes in different environments. Questionnaires and rating scales specifically designed for ADHD and Asperger Syndrome can be used. These scales help to assess the degree and nature of symptoms more objectively. The child's medical and developmental history should be carefully reviewed. Developmental delays or problems in early childhood may point to a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome. Sensory and motor assessments should be performed for Asperger Syndrome. These assessments can help identify sensory sensitivities and motor coordination problems. The child's communication skills, especially social communication and pragmatic language skills, should be carefully evaluated.

Understanding the symptoms and diagnostic criteria for both disorders can help ensure accurate and early diagnosis. A comprehensive evaluation under the guidance of a specialist will allow for the creation of the most appropriate intervention and support plan for your child's needs.

Do people with ADHD not feel certain emotions?

Research shows that impaired emotional processing in individuals with ADHD can have negative effects on both personal relationships and overall psychological well-being.
